The opening ceremony for the Paris Olympics was held on Friday night, as athletes across the world gather for the ancient sporting tradition.

More than 10,000 athletes from over 200 nations will go for the gold – and silver and bronze - over the next few weeks.

Only one Cumbrian has travelled to the French capital for the event - Kirkby Lonsdale's Fiona Crackles, but perhaps we would see more if a future Olympics was held across Cumbria.

Here is how we would imagine an Olympics taking place in the area, with events spread across Carlisle, Penrith, Keswick, the Lake District and more.

Opening Ceremony: Hadrian’s Wall Spectacle

The opening ceremony would feature a grand spectacle at Hadrian’s Wall, with light shows illuminating the ancient structure, and performers narrating the history of Cumbria from its Roman roots to the present day. Local artists, dancers, and musicians would come together to showcase the rich cultural heritage of the region.
